...because better screening saves lives
We now know that oral cancer claims one life every hour in the U.S. - and it is of great
concern to our practice. Almost 70% of all oral cancer victims are diagnosed in later stages,
so survival is extremely poor. Approximately 50% of oral cancer victims die within 5 years.
However, when discovered in its early stages, oral cancer is 90% survivable.
Alarmingly, more than 25% of oral cancer victims have no lifestyle risk factors such as
tobacco use, alcohol use, diabetes, or HIV. Everyone age 18 and older is considered at
increased risk for oral cancer. Individuals at high risk for oral cancer are adults age 40
or older and tobacco users regardless of age. At highest risk for oral cancer are those age
40 and older with lifestyle risk factors such as tobacco use, alcohol use, diabetes, HIV,
and those with a history of oral cancer.
Because early detection of oral cancer is the key to successful outcomes, our practice has
incorporated ViziLite Plus, the most advanced technology available for screening oral
abnormalities that could lead to cancer, into the standard of care of the practice. An
annual ViziLite Plus examination, following our standard oral cancer examination, will ensure
that you receive the most comprehensive oral cancer screening possible. ViziLite Plus is
similar to early detection technologies such as the mammogram, Pap Smear, and PSA test.
ViziLite Plus gives us the highest level of confidence that we're providing our patients
with a proven technology for early detection of oral cancer.
ViziLite Plus is a simple, painless and non-invasive device that improves our ability to
visualize suspicious areas at their earliest stages, a stage where these areas are still
treatable and therefore present a much higher chance of survivability. ViziLite Plus helps
the doctor and hygienist see what would be very hard to see with their eyes alone.
We are offering ViziLite Plus exams annually on all of or patients age 18 and older.
